Hollywood invests in Lonely Planet 2.0

Ashton Kutcher has recently invested in the Internet start-up Gidsy. Who? The guy of punked!? No, it’s not a setup. He is not going to punk someone this time. It’s indeed him. After investing in a number of startups, such as SoundCloud and Amen he’s gradually also achieving stardom in the world of angel investors and venture capitalists.

The Dutch brothers Edial and Floris Dekker have launched November last year what they call a Lonely Planet 2.0. The concept of Gidsy is quite straightforward: an online platform where people can offer local events such workshops, tours, courses, etc. and interested folks can sign in or ‘book’ for participation. Only after you have booked, Gidsy receives 10% provision from the host.

The investment sum is $1.4 million and meant to fuel the startup’s worldwide expansion. Already active in Amsterdam, Berlin and New York, it will launch in San Francisco and London over the next two weeks. Other investors that have helped to total this sum are Sunstone Capital, along with Index Ventures, Werner Vogels (of Amazon) and Peter Read (UK).

Edial Dekker is the CEO of Gidsy and has studied at the University of Amsterdam. His brother Floris Dekker is also the co-founder of the Dutch site hackdeoverheid. A site that calls for open and freely accessible government data.
